Under a Submersive Sun
:: processed and sequenced audio, 2006

This work toured with the 60x60 Midwest Mix where sixty one-minute works were all played back to back for one hour. It suggests a dreamlike aquatic environment experienced from the perspective of an underwater body as the sun shines through from above.

Gibson Block
:: synthesizer, field recordings, image composition software

This work is from a series of compositions whereby field recordings and graphic scores are generated from a specific location. In Gibson Block, the ambient field recording includes a lawn mower moving closer and further as it cuts the grass in the park across the street from a small-town, Midwestern general store. The score was generated by laying staff paper on the street and making a charcoal rubbing. By repeated xeroxing, the contrast increased, leaving pitch masses on the staff paper. This material was then translated into midi information and combined with the field recording to record a literal document of “place.”

In Here
:: processed and sequenced audio

This work is a film noir audio landscape created from found sound and field recordings including spontaneous vocal musings and cows from upstate New York. The highly processed and spatialized sounds are built around a loose narrative that occasionally jolts the listener while being dragged through the lull of night.

Portrait of John Cage
:: image to pitch software, image of John Cage

This work utilizes a computer program that reads the color and value of an image as pitch information. By moving the mouse over an image, essentially it can be played as music. In this case, a portrait of John Cage was the source material for an improvised recording of mouse movements.
